Q: Who are the Rescue Raccoons?
The Rescue Raccoons started as a group of friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers who formed a team to compete at the True North Rescue Challenge in Canada. Our team is USA-based, with members from Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio. We have backgrounds in the fire service, industrial rope access, engineering, and recreational climbing. Over the last few months, we have become a close group of friends who share a passion for being on rope and learning.

It started as a joke. When we decided to put a team together, we spent the first few weeks scrounging around to find teammates, gear, and anything else we needed. We felt like raccoons digging through a dumpster to collect whatever we could. When it came time to pick a team name, it felt like a good fit.
Q: Why do you compete?
We are here to challenge ourselves, have fun, and learn. Competitions push you in ways that normal training cannot. Training without pressure is one thing, but it is another when the clock is running and you are competing against and being assessed by some of the best rope professionals in the world. That pressure exposes your strengths and, more importantly, shows you what you need to work on.

Since we are spread across the Midwest, we get together about once a month for a multi-day practice. Most of our training revolves around systems. Our mindset is that if we can master the individual pieces of a rescue, we can solve just about any problem thrown at us. Everyone brings unique experience to the table, allowing us to learn from and push each other.

We were already using Reecoil gear before forming the team and were impressed with the quality and design, making it an easy choice for our official team gear. Our equipment gets heavily used—dragged across concrete, rocks, and gravel, tossed in trucks, hauled through airports, and packed for training weekends. Q: What’s next for The Rescue Raccoons?
We hope to keep competing, learning, and seeing where this takes us. As long as we are having fun, meeting great people, and continuing to improve, we will be happy.

Do it! It is a commitment, but we have met incredible people and learned more than we expected. Don't worry about being the best team out there. Show up, learn from the people around you, have fun, and most importantly, don't take yourself too seriously.
